Obituary

William "Bill" Clifton Mabry, II, 84 of Decatur, MS passed away Monday, October 10, 2022. He was born Thursday, September 15, 1938 in Jackson, Mississippi to Wilmer and Cerelle Mabry.  Much of his childhood was spent in Gulfport, MS where he graduated from high school at Gulfport High where he developed a love of playing tennis. He played tennis at both Mississippi State University and the University of Southern Mississippi. After graduating from USM in 1961, he served in the U.S. Army until moving to Washington D.C. where he served on the staff of Senator James Eastland from Mississippi. While working in D.C.he met and married Carol Mabry, his wife of 54 years.

For most of his career he was a contract administrator both on behalf of companies and the government including Martin Marietta, Avondale Shipbuilders, the US Army Corps of Engineers and NASA. He retired from working at Meridian Community College in their Workplace Development department where he assisted small and minority owned businesses to secure contracts with the government.

He was a lifelong Golden Eagles supporter, a beloved father of 4 and grandfather. He was a Gideon and an active member of the Berean Sunday School class at First Baptist Church in Newton.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, October 13, 2022 from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM at First Baptist Church of Newton in Newton, MS with funeral services immediately following. Burial will follow in the  Masonic Cemetery in Newton, Mississippi with Bro. Kelly Jordan officiating. Newton County Funeral Home - South is in charge of arrangements. (601-635-3200)

He was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Carol McElroy Mabry;  father, Wilmer Clifton Mabry;  mother, Cerelle Jewel Crawford Mabry;  and grandsons: Winner Charles Russell and Benson Norris Russell.

Survivors include his son, William "Chip" Clifton Mabry, III of Portland, OR;  daughters, Anne C. Mabry of Decatur, MS, Georgia Mabry Russell (Rusty) of Decatur, MS and Virginia Mabry Chertkow (Kevin) of Decatur, MS;  grandchildren, Jacob Chertkow, Abbye Chertkow, Christopher Chertkow, Nathan Chertkow, Elizabeth "Ellie" Russell, Mabry Russell and Aimee Mabry.
