Services celebrating the life of Susan Turner Harris will begin at 2:00 pm on Monday, April 22, 2024 at Newton United Methodist Church. Rev. Michael Hollis will officiate. Special music will be provided by Mr. Clark Scoggin and Mr. Jeff Hardy.
Ms. Harris, age 73, and a longtime resident of Newton, died Wednesday, April 17, 2024, at Ochsner's Rush Medical Center in Meridian. She was born in Monroe, Michigan and has lived in Mississippi since she was ten years old. Susan graduated from Newton High School in 1969, where she loved playing the flute and piccolo in the NHS band. She received her Bachelor's in Elementary Education from the University of Southern Mississippi. Susan taught school at Newton Elementary School for nine years before retiring to become a stay-at-home mom. As her parents aged, Susan took beautiful care of them. She enjoyed spending time with family and many dear friends. Susan had a great sense of humor and loved making other people laugh. She loved the Lord and was known for her Bible study, prayer life, and strong faith. In her later years, her grandsons, Brady and Bryson, were her greatest joy, and she focused on being the best Mia to them.
Survivors include her daughter, Kristen Thorne and her husband Matthew, of Newton; two grandsons, Brady (15) and Bryson (10); one sister, Trudy Madrid and husband Jay Madrid of Dallas; two nieces, Jody Swartzwelder and husband Grant, Mandy Grassley and three great nieces, Abbey and Kate Swartzwelder, Mia Grassley; her best friend, Nita McCullough, also survives.

A time of visitation will begin Monday at 12:00 pm and continue until service time at Newton United Methodist Church.
Since Susan was a breast cancer survivor, the family suggests that memorial donations be made to the American Cancer Society Benevolence Fund, P.O. Box 4449, Brandon, MS 39047.
Newton County Funeral Home - South, 100 Old Hwy. 15 Loop, Newton, is in charge of arrangements.
