Coach Richard Louis Harris, age 87, passed away on March 22, 2019.

Coach Harris was lifelong resident of Hickory, MS. He graduated from Hickory High School and went on to play basketball at East Central Junior College and Delta State. Coach also served in the United States Army.

After serving our country and graduating from college Coach began his coaching career. He coached basketball for 38 years in which he won five state championships. He was inducted in East Central Community College's Hall of Fame as a player and also inducted into Mississippi Coach's Hall of Fame.

He is survived by wife of 68 years, Mary Jo Harris; sons Rick Harris (Malou), Phil Harris (Peachy); grandchildren Amanda Whitman (Danny), Melissa Adam, Dustin Harris, Dylan Harris; great-grandchild McKenzie Adam, Macey Adam, Ella Whitman; and sister Syble Addy.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Louis and Mary Harris and sister Lou Nell Rasmassen.

Visitation will be held Saturday, March 23, 2019 from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Newton County Funeral Home-South and also Sunday, March 24, 2019 from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church in Hickory, MS.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM, Sunday, March 24, 2019 at Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church with Bro. Thomas Laird, Bro. Roger Laird, Bro. Ben Laird, and Bro. David Tero officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Dustin Harris, Dylan Harris, Kenny Addy, J.R. Addy, Arleigh Allen, Johnathon White and Danny Whitman.

Honorary pallbearers will be all of his former basketball players.
