Marguerite Roberta Winstead Harris, known affectionately as "Mockie", passed away quietly in her sleep on December 9, 2014. Born July 26, 1923, she had reached the noble age of 91 years, all filled with great interest and curiosity about the world. Raised on a small farm in the Mississippi woods, she had three siblings – Mary, "Billie", and Pete. The death of Little Pete when he was 7 years old left
a heaviness in her heart which she always carried. May the Creator reunite them in heaven.
She was a star player on the girls' basketball team at County Line High School in the late 1930s during the historic era now known as that of the Women Basketball Pioneers, playing a six-on-six two court
game which was the style of the day for women until 1971.
Marguerite's marriage to Charles Monroe Harris in 1942 (He fell in love from the stands at a basketball game.) welcomed a son and three daughters – a family in structure so similar to her birth family. The siblings' devotion and caring for each other stands as a testament to her fair-mindedness and generosity in their upbringing. She and Charles raised all four of them in the same house, which
grew as the family grew. Although she was gainfully employed much of the time, her chief interests in adulthood were in and about the home: sewing, music appreciation, cooking and preserving foods, reading, and gardening. She had a well-deserved reputation for the ability to grow anything the climate could support – fruits and vegetables of all sorts -- even a banana tree produced fruit in her yard.
She leaves her four children, Tommy (Nada Lee), Janie (John), Rita, and Nellie Beth, and many grandchildren, all of whom showed great fondness for her; her two sisters Mary and Billie and nieces
and nephews. She will be missed.
Funeral services for Mrs. Harris will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, December 13, 2014 at Clarke Venable Baptist Church in Decatur, MS. Visitation will begin at 10:00 AM at the church. Burial will follow at the Decatur City Cemetery.
