Obituary

Louise Bounds Lucas, 100, of Newton, MS passed away peacefully in her sleep on Wednesday, March 9, at Woodland Assisted Living.

Visitation will be held Saturday, March 12, from 10-11am at Newton County Funeral Home North in Newton, MS. Immediately following, the funeral service will be in the Chapel.

Rosa Louise Bounds was born December 9, 1921 in Conehatta, MS. Born at the end of World War 1, she was 1 of 9 children, and experienced a century of cultural and family life changes, and modern innovations. She loved her family, friends, and simple activities of life, such as drinking coffee with friends, playing bridge, telling stories, fishing, and working in her yard. She especially took great pleasure in telling jokes and mowing her lawn with a push mower, well into her 80's.

Louise, also known by many as Mama Lou, was gifted in the art of needlepoint and quilting. With hands that were made to create, she stitched countless pieces of fabric together and designed many beautiful quilts for family and friends. Ever the creative, Louise was a beautician, who owned and operated Lucas Beauty Shop out of her home. For many years, Louise used her talent of storytelling and being in the know, to write the column "News Around Newton" for the weekly newspaper, The Newton Record.

Louise was an active member of the Newton United Methodist Church and enjoyed being a part of civic organizations in the Newton community.

She was preceded in death by her husband J. W. Lucas, daughter, Jessie Whittle (Wilmer) and great-grandson, Luke.

Survivors include her son, Van Lucas, sister Betty Thames, and brother Giles Bounds (Judy). Grandchildren are Ted Whittle, Doug Whittle (Leigh Anne), Ellen Prince (Eric), Al Lucas (Christina), Jon Lucas (Anne), and Leigh Gilliland (Chad), great-grandchildren Sam Whittle, Sarah Beth Spears, Hunter Whittle, Mary Ellen Moore, John Whittle, Anne Cassidy Heafer, Rebecca Prince, Paul Prince, Oskar Lucas, Olivia Lucas, Jonathan Lucas, Katherine Lucas, Charlie Gilliland, Ben Gilliland, Laurian Gilliland, and many other great-grandchildren.

Asked to serve as pallbearers are Ted Whittle, Doug Whittle, Eric Prince, Al Lucas, Jon Lucas, Chad Gilliland, and Robbie Strickland.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Newton United Methodist Church, 600 Decatur Street, Newton, MS 39345.
