Laurine "Pee Wee" McMullan, age 71, retired manager of the Congregate Housing for the Newton Regional Housing Authority, passed away on Wednesday, August 26, 2026 under the professional care of the doctors, nurses and staff of Ochsner Rush Foundation Hospital in Meridian.

Funeral services will begin at 5:00 pm, on Friday, August 28, 2026 at Cedar Grove Baptist Church with burial to follow in the Cedar Grove Cemetery under the direction of Newton County Funeral Home.

Visitation will begin at 4:00 pm on Friday and continue until service time at the church.

She is preceded in death by her husband, John Luther Evans, Sr., her son, Billy Edward Evans, her parents, Leonard Leon Whitehead and Mildred Marie Beech Whitehead and her siblings, Jimmy Whitehead, Elvie Joann Smith, Lena Faye Porter, Patricia Ann Harvey, Allen Lee Whitehead, and Dianne Brewer.

Survivors include her children, Lisa Merrell (Raymond) of Newton, Tonya Logan (Corey) of Union, and John L. Evans, Jr. (Nikki) of Richlands, NC; a host of grandchildren and great grandchildren; her former husband and lifelong friend, James L. McMullan of Lake; one sister, Alice Hancock of Jackson; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Kent Mayes will speak at the service and pallbearers will be Christopher Merrell, Nathan Merrell, Elijah Merrell, Zachary Parks, John Hand, and Aiden Merrell.

Honorary pallbearers will be Peyton Logan, Phillip Parker and Billy Evans.
