Obituary

Mrs. Johnnie Mae Walker departed this life Sunday September 12, 2021 at her home in Newton, MS.

She was born October 17, 1919, to the late R.V. and Etoile Burkes Owens in Scott County, Mississippi.

Mrs. Johnnie Mae joined the Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church at an early age and later in 1942 she joined the St. John M. B. Church where she served in many capacities to include Choir member, Sunday Teacher, Usher, Home Mission Member, and support member for many other church organizations and committees.

Her formal Education was obtained by attending The Scott County School System.

In June 1942 she married Roosevelt Walker and to this union two Children were born, Edward Earl Walker and Walter Earl Walker. Roosevelt and Edward preceded her in death.  She was also preceded in death by two brothers R.V. Jr and Leclenzy Owens and seven sisters: Ella Owens Gray, Hattie Owens Fountain, Mattie Owens Williams, Leona Owens Anderson, Lodina Owens Cox, Maggie Owens Brown, and Lula Owens Fountain.

Mrs. Johnnie Mae became a resident of Newton County in 1942. She worked in Private Homes, The Newton Municipal School District, and Dollar General Inc., She retired from the Newton Municipal School District in 1984.

One of her great passions was Volunteerism.  She believed that helping the youth in one's community translated into educational opportunities that would provide increased quality of life as adults.  Some of the organization she volunteered through and for are Mississippi Homemakers Volunteers (75 Years), Mississippi 4-H Clubs (70 Years), Girl Scouts Inc., Red Cross, St. Jude's Children Hospital, City Wide Usher Board, Educational Industrial Association Woman's convention, and Sunday School B.T.U Congress.

She leaves to cherish her memory, one son Walter E. Walker, two daughters-in law, Laura B. Walker and Shirley M. Walker, Three Grandchildren, Katrina L. Walker, Ashley L. Walker and Edward H. Walker; two very special nieces, Essie Moye and Earleen Sanders; one very special nephew, Curtis Gray (deceased); one very Special Grand-niece, Tosca Taylor; one sister, Rosie  (George) Logan; two Sisters-in-Law, Yvonne Walker Evans, and Codaliah Walker Hardy and a host of other special nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Visitation will be held on Friday, September 17, 2021 from 3:00 PM till 7:00 PM at Newton County Funeral Home-South in Newton, MS.  Graveside services will be held on Saturday, September 18, 2021 at 10:00 AM at St. John M.B. Church Cemetery with Rev. Anthony Robinson officiating.
