Obituary

Jo Ann Somers, of Newton, Mississippi, passed away on November 23, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of compassion, dedication, and generosity. Born in Jacksonville, Texas, on May 7, 1948, Jo Ann pursued her lifelong calling in nursing, earning her BSN degree at Georgia State University. Board certified in infection control, Jo Ann's career was marked by excellence and service. She worked at hospitals in Atlanta, Georgia, before continuing her mission of care in the home health field until her retirement in 2013. Jo Ann was not only a skilled and well-trained nurse but also a caregiver who believed in treating the whole person. Her true passion was ensuring the total well-being of her patients—going beyond physical treatment to provide comfort, dignity, and peace, and she had the ability to make patients feel cared for and valued.

Outside of her profession, Jo Ann found joy in cooking. Before her illness, she delighted in preparing delicious meals and sharing them with friends, neighbors, family and sometimes, strangers. Her generosity extended beyond people; she was deeply compassionate toward animals, always ready to provide a home or a meal to any dog or cat in need.

Jo Ann was a member of the Church of Christ in Union, Mississippi, where her faith guided her life of service and kindness.

She is survived by her husband, Alan David; her sister, Gail Bragg (James); step-children Oliver David (Anne) of Atlanta and Hilary Dreyer (Frank); and step-grandchildren Felix Dreyer and Archer Dreyer of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She is also survived by nieces Laurie Walker (Chris) and Jodi Woodham (Richie), as well as great-nieces Olivia and Rachel Woodham and great-nephews Russ and Ryan Godwin and Logan McCord.

Jo Ann was preceded in death by her father, Don Spencer, her mother, Lola Spencer, and her brother, James Spencer, all of Texas.

Words that best describe Jo Ann are generous, caring, and compassionate. Her life was a testament to the power of kindness—whether through her nursing, her cooking, or her love for animals. She will be remembered as a woman who gave freely of herself and touched countless lives with her warmth and devotion.

Her kindness blooms like springtime flowers,

Her spirit rests in gentle skies.
