Obituary

Jesse Max Harris, age 93, died January 30, 2023 in Alpharetta, Ga.  He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Bonnie Louise Shelby Harris.  He is survived by his son Mike Harris (Brenda) and daughter Mitzi Lau (Bobby) and grandchildren, Jesse Harris, Rachel H. Page (Jay), Clayton Lau, Shelby Lau, and Natalie Lau all of Atlanta, Ga.

Born in 1929 in Decatur, Mississippi, to parents Thomas Monroe Harris and Nellie Eliza Harris; he was the youngest of ten children.

He graduated from East Central Jr. College and Mississippi State University earning a Masters degree in Entomology.  Following college, Jesse served in the U.S. Army in Korea.  After his military service, Jesse joined FMC Corporation as an Entomologist where he worked and lived in a variety of states for the duration of his working career.  While living in Marion, Arkansas he was a City Councilman for a number of years and served on the Planning Commission for Crittenden County.   He also was a deacon at Marion First Baptist Church.  After moving to Roswell, Ga. with FMC, he retired after 35 years.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, James C. Jerry Harris (Mittie Lou),  W. Bill Harris (Lois) and Charles Monroe Harris (Marguerite) and his sisters, Frances H. Smith (J.B.), Rebecca H. Smith (Jeff), Dorothy H. Wooley (Louis) and Evelyn H. Stafford (Art) and his brothers-in law Richard Wolf, George Gibbons, Charles Morgan Shelby, and Evan Alton Shelby.

Survivors also include his 98 year-old sister, Mildred H. Gibbons of Memphis Tn. and beloved sisters-in-law, Charlotte Shelby and Bonava Shelby of Jackson, Ms. and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was a lifelong Mississippi State and Atlanta Braves fan.  But most important he will be remembered as a loving and devoted father and grandfather with an easy going nature.

Services for Jesse Harris will be Saturday February 4, at Newton County Funeral Home North location.  Visitation will be from 1:00-2:00 with a service at 2:00 and burial in Liberty Cemetery, Newton, Ms. with Rev. Mark Vincent officiating.
