James Ellis Mitchell gained his wings on November 5, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of love, kindness, and unforgettable memories. Born on February 18, 1936, in Doddsville, Mississippi, within Sunflower County. He touched the lives of everyone who crossed his path. Known for his warm smile and unwavering generosity, he lived a life filled with compassion and grace.
James began his career working alongside Fred Gaddis in the local Gaddis Packing Company. He later played a key role in helping Fred build the success of McCarty Farms, which was eventually acquired by Tyson Farms. James continued his work as a Maintenance Manager in the poultry industry for 36 years, demonstrating unwavering dedication. He deeply valued the friendships he formed over the years, cherishing the connections that made his career so meaningful.
James dedicated 17 years of his life to preaching and sharing the word of Jesus Christ with everyone he encountered. His commitment to his faith was evident in his warm approach and genuine desire to uplift others. Whether in church, at community events, family gatherings, or in casual conversations, always eagerly spreading messages of hope and compassion. Known for his heartfelt sermons and thoughtful counsel, He always tried to leave a lasting impact on those he ministered. He strived to share God's word while helping many find peace, guidance, and a deeper connection in their faith.
Left to cherish his memory are his beloved wife of sixty-six years, Julia Maxine Mitchell; his children, Jeff Mitchell (Susan), Jan Mitchell Maner (Tony), and John Mitchell. He leaves behind a legacy of 18 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his siblings, Patricia Crosby, Peggy Dickerson (Bill), Brenda Crosby, Jimmy Mitchell (Linda), and Dianne Usry (David Joe). He was preceded in death by his parents, James Otis and Tennie Mitchell, brothers, Bobby Mitchell, Donald Mitchell, and Sonny Mitchell. Each of them carries a piece of his enduring legacy.
Though he may no longer walk among us, James' spirit lives on through the lives he touched and the invaluable lessons he shared. His warmth, wisdom, and kindness will remain forever in the hearts of those who knew him, a testament to a life well-lived and a love that will never fade.
Visitation will start at 10 a.m. and the funeral service will begin at 1 p.m. Saturday, November 9, 2024, at Hillcrest Church with Rev. Johnny Watkins, Bro. Reggie Tatum and Gary Morris officiating. Burial will follow in the Homewood Methodist Cemetery at 8720 Highway 35 South, Forest, MS. 39074. Newton County Funeral Home - North is in charge of arrangements. 601-635-3200
Serving as pallbearers will be his grandchildren. Honorary Pallbearers are Lance Wooten and all Great Grandchildren and Great, Great Grandchildren.
