Mr. James "Jim" A. Cates, 89, of Hickory, MS passed away Wednesday, April 13, 2022.

Visitation will be held from 10:00AM until 11:00AM on Monday, April 18, 2022 at Newton County Funeral Home-North (9998 Hwy 15 Newton, MS 39345) with funeral services immediately following. Interment will be at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Newton with Dr. Randy Rich officiating the services.

Mr. Jim was a faithful member and deacon of Hickory Baptist Church for many years. He was a United States Navy Veteran and also a Mason. He was an avid golfer, enjoyed working in the yard, and spending time with his camping club members. He will be remembered as a dedicated Christian husband and father.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Otis and Hattie Fortenberry Cates; brothers, Warren Cates and Howell Cates; and sister, Billie Lee.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, JoAnn Everett Cates; and daughter, Alecia Smith (Tony) of Petal, MS.

Pallbearers will be Douglas McGrew, Sandy Thaxton, David Lee, Wyatt Tullos, Justin Mills, and Lowery McGee.
