Funeral services for George S. Monroe II will begin at 11:00 am on Wednesday, October 07, 2026 at First Baptist Church of Newton with Rev. Chris Spence officiating. Burial will follow privately in Bethel Baptist Cemetery in Newton County under the direction of Newton County Funeral Home.
Visitation will begin one hour prior to the services at the church on Wednesday.
George Smiley Monroe II, age 84, passed away peacefully on October 2, 2026.
Born on October 31, 1941, George was the son of the late Grover Clark Monroe and Helen Tyner Monroe of Newton, Mississippi. He lived a life marked by public service, professional excellence, and devotion to his family.
George earned a Bachelor of Public Administration degree from the University of Mississippi in 1963 and went on to receive his Juris Doctor from the University of Mississippi School of Law in 1966. He was admitted to the practice of law on June 4, 1966, beginning a distinguished legal career that spanned many decades. Throughout his professional life, he earned the respect of colleagues and clients alike and was recognized with a Distinguished Rating from Martindale-Hubbell, reflecting his high professional achievement and ethical standards.
Mr. Monroe served as County Attorney and later Newton County Youth Court Judge. He strived to provide influence and guidance to the Newton County youth that appeared before him.
In addition to his legal career, George faithfully served his country in the United States Army Reserve, retiring with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel after years of dedicated military service.
George loved spending time at the farm and enjoyed gardening and sharing his produce with others.
George was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church of Newton where he served as Sunday School teacher for the Berean Class for many years.
Above all, George cherished his family. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Lynn Monroe; children, Grover Clark Monroe II and his wife, Misty; Richard Walton Monroe; Jennifer Lynn Gill and her husband, Matt and George Taylor Monroe and his wife, Christy; grandchildren, Kathryn Walton Paluszak and her husband, Philip; Emily Gill Starkes and her husband, Alex; George Wakeland (Wake) Monroe and his wife, Kallen; Julia Lynn Gill and her fiancé, James Vaughn; Sarah Katherine Gill; Haylee Bartolomei; Samantha Keller; Brooke Keller and Nathan Edward Monroe; great granddaughter, Aurora Bartolomei.
George's life was defined by integrity, duty, and commitment to others. His legacy lives on through his family, his service to his profession, and the many lives he touched throughout his years.
The family invites all who knew George to remember him through acts of kindness and service to others, qualities that he exemplified throughout his life.
