Obituary

Ernestine Jaudon McGaugh Burns died peacefully at Hospice of Winston-Salem, NC, on Tuesday, August 6, 2013.

She was born in Monroe County, MS, on February 9, 1914, to Paul L. and Beryl West Jaudon. She retired in 1975 as Professor of Sociology and Psychology at Clarke Memorial Junior College in Newton, MS. Prior to teaching, Mrs. Burns worked in Administration at the same college. She graduated from Southern Mississippi University, earning both a Bachelor and Master's degree.

Mrs. Burns was a member of Knollwood Baptist Church since moving to Winston-Salem from Newton, MS, in 1997.

She is preceded in death by her parents and two loving husbands, A. L. "Mac" McGaugh and A. Sidney Burns, and three siblings, Evna L. Jaudon , William T. Jaudon, and Sarah Grace J. Gallop.

She is survived by two daughters, Anne McGaugh Compere of Winston-Salem, NC, and Marcia M. Blackburn (Warner) of Jacksonville, FL; five grandchildren: Layne Compere Starling of Winston-Salem, NC, LouAnn Compere Vaughn (Scott) of Charlotte, NC, William Lee Compere of Winston-Salem, NC, Lisa Blackburn Lundgren (David) of Bluffton, SC, and Scott W. Blackburn (Christi) of Poway, CA; seven great-grandchildren: Padgett Lane Vaughn, Rachael Anne Vaughn, Sydney Compere Vaughn, Virginia Susan Starling, Jessica Ashley Blackburn, Katherine Taylor Blackburn, and Shannon Leigh Blackburn; two sisters: Esther "Star" Dahlem of Columbus, MS, and Mavis P. Daves of Columbus, MS; two brothers: Robert C. Jaudon (Yvonne) of Columbus, MS, and Jerry L. Jaudon of Moscow, TN, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Ernestine Burns was beloved by all who knew her and was active in every church and community in which she lived, serving on boards, committees, and participating in and leading numerous professional organizations, even at Brookridge Retirement Community where she moved at age 84.

The family expresses enormous gratitude to Brookridge staff and Hospice caregivers for their intense high quality care.

Interment will take place in Newton, Mississippi, on Saturday, August 17, 2013 at with a service of Worship, Remembrance, and Hope at 2 P.M. from the Newton County Funeral Home North Chapel, 9998 Hwy. 15 N., Newton. Burial will follow in the Newton County Memorial Gardens. Visitation will begin at 1 P.M. at the funeral home on Saturday.
