Obituary

Funeral services for Derwin Trent "Woose" Estes will be held on Thursday, September 7, 2023 at 11:00 am at Mt. Vernon Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Mt. Vernon Baptist Church Cemetery under the direction of Newton County Funeral Home.

Rev. Steve Pouncey, Rev. Wayne Hemingway, and Rev. Bill Boulton will officiate. Music for the service will be provided by Mr. Ricky Kilgore, and Mrs. Landrey Morris, soloists,  and Mrs. Cindy Williams, instrumentalist.

Mr. Estes, age 60, of Newton, passed away Saturday, September 2, 2023 at the Ochsner Rush Medical Center in Meridian after a lengthy illness. He was a 1981 graduate of Hickory High School. He furthered his education at Meridian Community College and Tennessee Tech University. Derwin was a retired computer technician for Newton County Schools. He was a Christian by testimony of his faith and an active member of Mt. Vernon Baptist Church in the Hero community. He enjoyed using his musical talent as a drummer, and served the Lord using  those talents while he attended Faith Baptist Church in Meridian. He will be remembered as a strong, courageous fighter having been a kidney transplant recipient, twice. He will be missed by those who knew and loved him.

He was preceded in death by his father: Billy Estes and a host of aunts and uncles.

Survivors include his mother: Mrs. Juanita Coker Estes of Newton; two brothers, Roger Estes of Newton and Gaylon Estes (Tracy) of Nashville, TN; two nephews: Brandon Estes and Auston Estes; one niece: Cameron Estes; one great-nephew and two great-nieces: Mason, Chloe and Sophie and a host of cousins and many friends.

Pallbearers will be Brandon Estes, Auston Estes, Ronnie Estes, Matt Gibbon, Curt Mathis, and Royce Mathis.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, September 6, 2023 from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm at Newton County Funeral Home - South Chapel, 100 Old Highway 15 Loop, Newton and on Thursday one hour prior to the service at the church.
