Obituary

Charles Albert Vance, 85, of Newton, Mississippi, went home to be with his Lord, Friday, August 31, 2018. He was born in Newton County on January 14, 1933.

Visitation will be held on, Sunday, September 2, 2018, from 9:00 am until 11:00 am. at Newton United Methodist Church. Funeral Services will at 11:00 am. Burial will follow in Newton County Memorial Gardens. Rev Gary Howse will officiate. Newton County Funeral Home-North is in charge of arrangements. (601) 635-3200

Mr. Vance was affectionately known as "Chief" because of his service as Chief Warrant Officer as well as the Chief of the Newton Fire Department. His military service covered 40 years with 8 years of active duty. He retired with the rank of Chief Warrant Officer 4. His military awards included many medals and service ribbons. He was with the Newton Fire Department for 30 years and served as Chief for 18 of those years.

He was selected Newton's Outstanding Man of the Year in 1983. He was very active in the Newton United Methodist Church and held many offices there.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Lessie Vance; and his brother, James Vance.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley Vance of Newton, MS; his son, Dr. Gregory Alan Vance (Martha Jo) of Jackson, MS; his daughter, Cynthia Jayne Crenshaw (Dr. Charles Crenshaw, III) of Brandon, MS; a granddaughter, Cari Clarkson of Brandon, MS; two grandsons, Charles Crenshaw, IV of Brandon, MS and Gregory Ray Vance of Jackson, MS; five great-grandchildren, Charles "Fin" Crenshaw, V, Ezra "Van" Clarkson, Zoe Clarkson, Tyner Crenshaw, Mila Rose Crenshaw. Numerous nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be Ricky Russell, Rusty Cooper, David Dennis, Jonathan Dennis, Mason Dennis, Nathan Savell, Alan Carr, and Chuck Crenshaw.

Honorary pallbearers will be special friends from his military service, time serving as Chief of the Newton Fire Department, and the men of the Mixed Blessings Sunday School Class.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Newton United Methodist Church.
