Obituary

Funeral services for Bobby Caldwell will be held on Saturday, September 14, 2024, at 2:00 pm at Pleasant Ridge Missionary Baptist Church with Bro. William Savell, Bro. Roger Laird, and Bro. Thomas Laird officiating.   Burial will follow in Pleasant Ridge Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery under the direction of Newton County Funeral Home.

Robert Kenneth Caldwell was born Friday, October 2, 1931 in Hickory. He was a graduate of Hickory High School (Class of 1949) and furthered his education at East Central Junior College and the University of Southern Mississippi. He was a veteran of the United States Army and the American Legion Post #173. He was a former school teacher on the Hopi Reservation in Northern Arizona for 33 years, retiring in 1990. Bobby was a charter member of the Newton County Historical & Genealogical Society (NCHGS) in 2002 and did volunteer work at the Archives for 17 years. He enjoyed 10 years of part-time employment with Newton County Funeral Home. His greatest joy was serving the Lord in many capacities at Pleasant Ridge Missionary Baptist Church. He passed away Wednesday, September 4, 2024 at Baptist Anderson Regional Medical Center in Meridian after a brief illness at the age of 92.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Evva Gibbon Caldwell; two brothers, Carl Caldwell (Mary) and Donald Caldwell (Ann); two nephews, Ken Caldwell and Don Caldwell and one nephew-in-law: Byron Berglund.

Survivors include two nephews and  two nieces,  Anne Marie Berglund of New Baltimore, MI, Jim Caldwell (Gayle) of Leesville, LA, Charlie Caldwell (Cindi) and Betty Caldwell, both of DeRidder, LA; two nieces-in-law, Sue Caldwell of Lake Charles, LA, and Linda Caldwell of Cookeville, TN; one first cousin, Joe Giles of Laurel; several great nieces, great nephews, great-great nieces and great-great nephews; one step-brother, James  O. Swearingen of Hickory and one step-sister, Sarah Sellers of Russell and his extended Hopi family of Arizona.

Pallbearers will be Jim Caldwell, Adam Caldwell, Joel Caldwell, Steve Pugh, Hank Pugh and Kyle Pugh.

Honorary pallbearers will be James O. Swearingen, Larry Crader, Jerry Laird, Mark Caldwell, and Vincent Caldwell.

Visitation will be held on Friday, September 13, 2024, from 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm   at Newton County Funeral Home - South, 100 Old Highway 15 Loop, Newton, MS 39345, and one hour prior to the services at the church on Saturday.

The Caldwell family would like to extend sincere appreciation to the Hickory Clinic, We Care Agency of Hickory, Well Care Home Health Services, the Staff of Baptist Anderson Regional Medical Center, North and South Campuses, his private care takers, and Gentiva Hospice.
