Funeral services for Hubert Lee Comans will be held at 11:00 A.M. Newton County Funeral Home South , on Saturday, November 27, 2010 with Dr. Frank Harmon officiating. Burial will be in Newton Masonic Cemetery. Newton County Funeral Home South, 100 Old Highway 15 Loop, Newton, is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Comans, 93. of Newton, died Monday, November 22, 2010 in Mobile, AL. He was born and raised in Dixon, MS. Mr. Comans then moved to Newton with his wife Justina Strum Comans who he was married to for 65 years. He graduated from East Central Community College where he earned a literary award for his writing skills. Mr. Comans was an active member of First Baptist Church of Newton where he was a proud member of his Berean Sunday School Class. He enjoyed his Coffee Club Group at the Newton Depot and was an avid fisherman and hunter.
Mr. Comans was a proud World War II Veteran. He entered the Army in 1941 and served with the 22nd Infantry of the 4th Infantry Division in Europe. He campaigned in France, Belgium, Luxembourg, and Germany. Mr. Comans landed on Utah Beach in France on day two of the Normandy Invasion and fought in the Saint-Lo breakthrough, through the Seigfried Line, Hurtgen Forest and in the Battle of the Bulge. He was awarded a Bronze Star for an act of heroism near Buchet, Germany, in September, 1944.
